Clear Crystal Ashtray by Daum, 1960s

Nancy, 1960s. Daum, a crystal house since 1878, was then exploring rough textures that broke with traditionally polished crystal. This ashtray is an uncommon example within the house's production. Cut from thick clear crystal, it sets a smooth inner well against outer walls worked in relief — like ice or bark — that catch the light and refract the transparency. Two notches serve as cigarette rests. The piece is signed Daum France under the base. Very good condition: the crystal is free of chips and notable scratches, the signature crisp. A discreet, little-documented model from the house, here a one-of-a-kind example. At 17 cm long by 12.5 cm wide and 5 cm high, this ashtray sits on a desk or coffee table, as an ashtray or a catch-all alike. A piece of French crystal, sober and honest.
