Round Marble Coffee Table - HASHI Series

The Hashi is a marble coffee table offered in three stones, a low round table on which the marble is left to lead and the base kept deliberately quiet. Each stone gives the table a different temperament while the form stays the same. The three range from restrained to dramatic. Arabescato Vagli is a white marble from the Vagli basin in the Apuan Alps above Carrara, its sweeping grey veins drawn in the flowing, arabesque lines that give the stone its name. Dover White is the calmest of the three, a clean white marble whose fine, soft veining stays in the background so the form itself carries the piece. Kenya Black turns the register up, a near-total black broken by pale veining that branches like the grain of old wood, folding back on itself where two slabs are matched. Every top is cut from its own block, so no two of these marble coffee tables are quite alike. The base is the quieter feat. Two panels of the same stone are notched at right angles and slotted one through the other into a self-supporting cross-leg structure, so the coffee table stands with no bracket and no visible fixing. What holds the piece up is exactly what holds the eye: an interlocking cross-leg join, left plain as the only ornament the design permits.
