Sculptural Brutalist Wengé and Smoked Glass Round Coffee Table, 1970s

A striking round coffee table from the 1970s, combining the rich character of wengé wood with smoked glass and defined by bold geometric proportions and a distinctly architectural presence. The table is supported by three substantial cylindrical legs in wengé, positioned around the perimeter and rising slightly above the glass top. Their strong vertical form contrasts beautifully with the thin circular plane of smoked glass.

A curved wooden frame follows the circumference of the tabletop, connecting the three supports and creating a refined and unusual construction. The smoked glass sits within this structure while remaining visually light, allowing the sculptural base to remain fully visible.

The deep brown tones and pronounced grain of the wengé are complemented by the dark smoked glass, resulting in a restrained and sophisticated material palette. Despite its substantial construction, the transparency of the glass gives the table a surprisingly light appearance. With its combination of cylindrical volumes, circular geometry and strong material contrast, the table is a distinctive example of 1970s European modernist design, with a subtle Brutalist character.
