The BLEO Stool III by Daniel Couttolenc is a sculptural solid oak stool composed entirely from stacked spheres and hemispheres. A central sphere is supported at the base by inverted hemispheres; at the top, upward-facing hemispheres form the seating surface. The entire piece is a study in how a single form — the sphere — can generate a composition of considerable complexity and presence when arranged with precision. The cream wash tint finish gives the oak a warmth that softens the geometry without diminishing it. BLEO is rooted in the sphere — a form whose perfect geometry has resonated across nature and culture for millennia. Each piece in the collection is built from that primary form and its half: the hemisphere. Proportioned according to the golden ratio, the relationships between volumes are calculated to produce a sense of resolved harmony, the same quality found in a well-composed piece of music. Handcrafted in Mexico in solid oak, the wood is worked to reveal the interplay of curved and flat surfaces — the way light moves differently across a hemisphere than across a plane.
